What’s Going On in 2019
Wow, are we already a whole week into 2019? This year has gotten to a great, albeit hectic, start. If you’re anything like me, you’ve got a long list of goals for 2019, and it seems like 12 months isn’t enough time to get it all done.
But here we are, back from the haze that is the holiday season. Yes, I did do some work during that time, but I also swapped exercising for eating fistfuls of the Jack Daniels fudge that my mom made for the week, so a haze it was (from the sugar—the whiskey was cooked out of the fudge… I think).
As far as reading goes, I am setting the somewhat-ambitious goal (for me) of reading a book per week. That’s not a stretch for the pace at which I read, but I do struggle to maintain consistent with how often I read. But for me, this year is all about learning as much as possible, which means I really want to prioritize reading. I finished my first book yesterday: Why Buddhism Is True by Robert Wright. His book The Moral Animal had a huge effect on me last year, and this new title proved no less thought-provoking.
I started the next book on my list today, which is Between You & Me by Mary Norris. Norris started working for The New Yorker in 1978, where she was a query proofreader. This book is an exploration of her career, grammar, and all things wordy and nerdy. Truly a copyeditor’s dream come true.
Another focus of mine for this year is professional development. I am now enrolled in UC San Diego Extension’s Copyediting Certificate program, and I’ll start with a grammar lab next week. I’ve also got a copyediting class from the EFA coming up in March, so I am sure to be busy!
And, finally, I’ll also be doing some traveling next month. I am visiting a friend who lives in Brussels for a month, and I’ll be sneaking off to some other European cities when I get the chance to take a break from working and classes. I’ll be writing some blog posts (with pictures!) when I’m there.
2019 is already shaping up to be an amazing year, thanks to my lovely clients, family, and friends. I’m planning on blogging more this year about my favorite books, what kind of work I’m doing, and writing and editing in general. Let’s keep in touch!
